Allowing students to research
both sides of an issue and then debate and debrief awakens their critical
thinking in a powerful way. Further, debate formats provide a safe environment
in which to discuss controversial issues. Allowing students to switch and
re-debate on the opposing side strengthens their command of the material and
their ability to take multiple perspectives.
School debate competition was
held among four houses at activity hall on 15th April. Students from
classes 6,7 and 8 partook in the completion. Mrs. Saradha Rani, one of the
coordinators of CCA of our school anchored the competition. Mr. Sourav
Mukkerjee CCA I/C assisted us for the better participation and organization of
the debate.
The theme of the debate was
“Mobile phones are effective for youth or not”. House incharge teachers were asked to select
four students from each group and set motion of the debate. Two houses were
prepared to speak for and two were against.
The audience highly appreciated
the debate. The participation in debate provided the students lots of
opportunities for instantaneous thinking and speaking. The students were able
to acquire fluency in their spoken English. The audience also experienced the
reasoning power among students at the time of debate. It helped the
participants to learn how to organize their ideas in a systematic way.
At last audience got an opportunity to evaluate
the positive and negative realm of the debate
